Leveraging RPO to Meet Demand for Technology Staff

The Need

In 2018, this television and digital media leader was facing an internal tech talent shortage, and 2019 was going to be a year of heavy hiring for their technology teams. At the time, their internal recruiters needed serious support to find and hire employees with speed. The organization needed to hire dozens of full-time staff across a range of tech specializations including: Digital Products, Enterprise Systems + Applications, Data Engineering, Project Management, Cybersecurity, Infrastructure, Strategy and Operations.

Harvey Nash, a contingent technology talent partner to the client since 2013, was keenly aware of the transformation opportunities facing the organization and its product, data and enterprise technology teams. “We partnered with these teams to support their workforce growth for several years and witnessed how they were embracing data and emerging technologies to advance their business and external product offering,” said Diana Dunnan, Senior Director of Business Development for Harvey Nash. “When they asked if we could provide an RPO solution to support a hiring blitz of full-time tech staff, we were ready to jump in.”

The Solution

The key to the Harvey Nash RPO solution was the combination of strategic embedding and dedicated outsourcing. Harvey Nash placed a Head of Technology Recruitment and a Service Delivery Manager on site to oversee all talent acquisition efforts. Those on-site recruitment experts were supported by a team of recruiters working onshore and in Harvey Nash’s global recruitment center in Vietnam. Those offshore resources provided data-driven marketplace and talent intelligence.

Harvey Nash’s balance of embedded resources and outsourced expertise produced a non-stop recruitment cycle that accelerated the engagement and acquisition of top technology talent. By establishing an on-site team with access to the company’s recruitment teams and systems, Harvey Nash was also able to provide highly responsive, white-glove talent acquisition services. The client’s staff had direct, in-person access to Harvey Nash recruiters who worked side by side with hiring managers, collaborating on job profiles, gathering feedback, providing status updates, and scheduling interviews.

The Results

By placing part of the RPO team on site and creating a dedicated, around-the-clock recruitment engine, Harvey Nash facilitated a 15-month, high-speed, highly productive hiring push for the client. Of the 26 full-time hires Harvey Nash made there in between August of 2018 and November of 2019, time-to-hire averaged 34 business days, and was drastically shorter for individual contributor roles. For example, platform and DevOps Engineers were hired within a month while senior director and management positions took an average of four to six weeks to fill.

The roles filled spanned the full range of technology skills and experience, from Cloud Engineers and RPA experts to Product Managers, Big Data Specialists, and senior VP-level technology leaders. At the end of November 2019, the project wrapped up with 26 new technology employees on board. Harvey Nash continues to serve the client as a contingent talent provider for contract and full-time searches.
